My collection of teddy bears

Posted By mgeedey on January 10, 2012

I have been collecting teddy bears since I was a little girl. At last count I had more than 200. I have the full count but it’s my little secret. Although I love collecting them, I have been getting them as gifts, souvenirs and “just because” for years.

I have little ones and big ones. I have some that are very expensive (usually I don’t gift these :P ) from large teddy bear factories and free ones that came with a meal. All of them have a story behind them and looking at them remind me of where I was when I got it and even who I was with.

I have a complete collection of those tiny ones given out by a restaurant chain some years ago. They are still in the plastic bags. I worked hard to get all of them and ate a lot of cheeseburgers along the way.

Ever since I upgraded to high speed internet and more recently to the internet service provided by get.wildblue.com, my online search has gotten a little out of hand. Although, I have found many teddy bears that I was missing from my collections this way, my spend has gotten a little out of hand :) .

The ones I spend the most money on and are hands down my favorites are the Christmas bears. I have one for every years since I was 6. My mom started this tradition and continues it still. The shiny velvet and rich colors are always welcome on Christmas morning. When I have a child, I will continue this tradition with them too. If you’re looking to get a start on creating your own teddy bears that you can gift to others a great starting point is www.vermontteddybear.com. Personalizing a bear for someone else is great way of showing others you care. Especially if you focus on the details.

The Goldilocks Story Was Popular Before Teddy Bears Arrived

Posted By admin on September 14, 2011

While Goldilocks wasn’t always Goldilocks, the story of The Three Bears was in circulation long before the teddy bear appeared in 1902. It’s believed the tale started in an oral tradition, passed on that way until it was published anonymously by British poet Robert Southey in 1837.

In Southey’s version, the story featured three bachelor bears and a nosy old woman, described unflatteringly. With Southey’s approval, another British writer, George Nicol, published a rhyming adaptation that same year, also with an old woman breaking into the home.

With the cupid celebration just around the corner you might want to consider a bear from the collection of British bear artist Deb Canham as a gift for your little heart-thumper.Canham started making delightfully adorable miniature bears almost 30 years ago at her kitchen table. The designs won a series of International Industry awards and in 1996 (after having worked for Teddy Hermann Original) she started Deb Canham Artist Designs with the purpose of producing high quality miniatures (bears and more).Collections run from as small as 1.4 inches in height to 14 inches, and they run the gamut from Patriotic to Life’s Lil’ Monsters, and even include a Valentine’s collection with such cuties as Aimee the Valentine’s Bear, Canoodles the Valentine Dragon, and Sweetie Pie the Valentines Mouse. While these have sold out, there are still many adorable options from Canham’s 2010/2011 collection like Nihao the Valentine Panda, Rosa the Valentine Mouse, and Cutesie the Little Gem Bear made out of velvet. Most creations have limited pieces so if you want to get your sweetie on track to start collecting, there’s no better way than with a Canham design.

How Much is That Teddy in the Window?

There are a lot of people who think teddy bears are nothing more than a child’s plaything; but to others, they’re money in the bank. Take for example the Titanic Bear which was issued in 1925 to mourn the sinking of the Titanic. According to records from Christies Fine Art Auction House the bear sold in 2000 for the equivalent of 141,313 US dollars.Likewise, the Louis Vuitton limited edition bear that was released in 2000 was sold via Teddies de l’ann Monaco for in that same year for the equivalent of 200,226 US dollars. For a teddy bear, you exclaim? You bet. So, if you have a few teddies that have been hiding in your closet for a number of years you may want to get them dusted off and valued.A few things to keep in mind when considering their adoption to a new home are:

  • Condition: A bear with all his original features will be more appealing to a collector and therefore more valuable; ;but a bear that shows sign or wear and tear may be equally valuable depending how (more…)

Make your own home-made teddy

Posted By admin on October 6, 2010

There’s several ways to make a teddy, and when you’ve chosen a method, then you have to pick from a variety of materials. With so many techniques, how do you know which one to chose? Well, one particular method is needle felting, and it produces a really cute teddy. So what is needle felting? Starting with a large ball of wool, needle felters shape the material into a finished figure. The most important item you need, other than the wool, is a felting needle. The needles are designed to manipulate the wool’s fiber and rebind the different layers. The needles are what will give your bear its shape, and without one, you won’t be molding anything. (more…)

The extraordinary story behind Steiff Bears

Posted By admin on September 29, 2010

The story behind Steiff is a remarkable one. Like Adolph Gund, Margarete Steiff was a German teddy maker. At an early age, Margarete was diagnosed with Polio; a disease which often leaves its victims paralyzed. The teddy maker could only make her teddies with one hand, yet despite her physical limitations, she continued to sew. By 1880, Margarete turned her passion into a company, and for 130 years, Steiff continues to be a success. It wasn’t until 1902, after the urging of her nephew (Richard Steiff), that the business began producing teddy bears. Now, teddy collectors can recognize Steiff bears by the buttons in their ears. Franz Steiff was responsible for the symbol, and the company has been producing the buttons since 1904. (more…)
