I have been collecting teddy bears since I was a little girl. At last count I had more than 200. I have the full count but it’s my little secret. Although I love collecting them, I have been getting them as gifts, souvenirs and “just because” for years.

I have little ones and big ones. I have some that are very expensive (usually I don’t gift these ) from large teddy bear factories and free ones that came with a meal. All of them have a story behind them and looking at them remind me of where I was when I got it and even who I was with.

I have a complete collection of those tiny ones given out by a restaurant chain some years ago. They are still in the plastic bags. I worked hard to get all of them and ate a lot of cheeseburgers along the way.

Ever since I upgraded to high speed internet and more recently to the internet service provided by get.wildblue.com, my online search has gotten a little out of hand. Although, I have found many teddy bears that I was missing from my collections this way, my spend has gotten a little out of hand .

The ones I spend the most money on and are hands down my favorites are the Christmas bears. I have one for every years since I was 6. My mom started this tradition and continues it still. The shiny velvet and rich colors are always welcome on Christmas morning. When I have a child, I will continue this tradition with them too. If you’re looking to get a start on creating your own teddy bears that you can gift to others a great starting point is www.vermontteddybear.com. Personalizing a bear for someone else is great way of showing others you care. Especially if you focus on the details.

While Goldilocks wasn’t always Goldilocks, the story of The Three Bears was in circulation long before the teddy bear appeared in 1902. It’s believed the tale started in an oral tradition, passed on that way until it was published anonymously by British poet Robert Southey in 1837.

In Southey’s version, the story featured three bachelor bears and a nosy old woman, described unflatteringly. With Southey’s approval, another British writer, George Nicol, published a rhyming adaptation that same year, also with an old woman breaking into the home.

In 1849, the old woman became a young girl, and over time, the bears became who we now know as Mama Bear, Poppa Bear and Baby Bear. The name “Goldilocks,” took longer, though. Although the girl in the story had many names over the years, it wasn’t until the early 20th century that Goldilocks stuck.

What was once, like most folktales, a scary, cautionary story, has changed over the years. The unsetting tale of an elderly, unlikeable woman trespassing and taking liberties in the home of three bachelor bears transformed, becoming a story fit for a nighttime cuddle with a favorite teddy, just about the same time that teddy bear itself was born.

There is nothing more precious than a Steiff bear. These popular bears from Germany, are highly collectible and can demand a pretty penny when being sold. The Steiff Company began manufacturing this bear in 1892, so if you have one today, it is quite valuable.

There are some things that one must keep in mind with dealing with Steiff. They are many knockoffs of this type of bear. By following these tips you will be able to make sure you are dealing with an authentic:

1. In 1904 Steiff began putting metal buttons in the left ear. While the material of the button is not important, be it brass, copper, metal the lettering is. The earliest bears have raised lettering.

2. Really old bears were made of mohair. The newer bears after 1947 were made with synthetic fibers.

3. The eyes can tell you a lot about a Steiff. Early eyes were button style. Then in the 1910 they started
inserting glass eyes and finally in 1960 they switched to plastic.

4. Look for an authentic tag sewn into the bear. This tag should say Made in Germany and Steiff and have a serial number.

5. The early bears were stuffed with wool and the later bears were stuffed with a soft synthetic.

Trust your gut when purchasing one of these bears. If the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. By doing a simple once over on the bear and verifying a few things you could have quite a find on your hands. The information party rocks on: Saturday Scavenger Shots: Bear

Teddy bear collection is a past time that child and adult-alike enjoy. However, finding older teddy bears that are not made anymore can be difficult, making it a quite precarious item to collect. By following some simple steps it’s possible to find the teddy bear that you have always been looking for.
First determine the year and design of the teddy bear that you are looking for. Perhaps it’s a teddy bear that you had in your childhood and now have lost. The full explanation can be found at http://treebeard31.wordpress.com/2011/07/09/its-all-fun-and-games-until-the-giant-freaky-teddy-bear-comes-along/ The first thing you should do is ask loved ones in the family, as they can give you the first clue. Possibly browse through the selection of antique teddy bears on various websites.
Now you have to find a place to buy the teddy bear. Finding the year and model is the first difficult step. This search could involve many trips to many specialty antique stores and hours searching through online auction sites. Be sure to bring a picture of the teddy bear you desire with you to make the search easier.
Once you find the teddy bear it’s time to assess if it needs to be repaired. Good luck with your teddy bear and enjoy your collecting hobby!

With the cupid celebration just around the corner you might want to consider a bear from the collection of British bear artist Deb Canham as a gift for your little heart-thumper.Canham started making delightfully adorable miniature bears almost 30 years ago at her kitchen table. The designs won a series of International Industry awards and in 1996 (after having worked for Teddy Hermann Original) she started Deb Canham Artist Designs with the purpose of producing high quality miniatures (bears and more).Collections run from as small as 1.4 inches in height to 14 inches, and they run the gamut from Patriotic to Life’s Lil’ Monsters, and even include a Valentine’s collection with such cuties as Aimee the Valentine’s Bear, Canoodles the Valentine Dragon, and Sweetie Pie the Valentines Mouse. While these have sold out, there are still many adorable options from Canham’s 2010/2011 collection like Nihao the Valentine Panda, Rosa the Valentine Mouse, and Cutesie the Little Gem Bear made out of velvet. Most creations have limited pieces so if you want to get your sweetie on track to start collecting, there’s no better way than with a Canham design.

There are a lot of people who think teddy bears are nothing more than a child’s plaything; but to others, they’re money in the bank. Take for example the Titanic Bear which was issued in 1925 to mourn the sinking of the Titanic. According to records from Christies Fine Art Auction House the bear sold in 2000 for the equivalent of 141,313 US dollars.Likewise, the Louis Vuitton limited edition bear that was released in 2000 was sold via Teddies de l’ann Monaco for in that same year for the equivalent of 200,226 US dollars. For a teddy bear, you exclaim? You bet. So, if you have a few teddies that have been hiding in your closet for a number of years you may want to get them dusted off and valued.A few things to keep in mind when considering their adoption to a new home are:

Condition: A bear with all his original features will be more appealing to a collector and therefore more valuable; ;but a bear that shows sign or wear and tear may be equally valuable depending how that wear and tear occurred (or by whom).

Manufacturer: Steiff and other German manufacturers are highly sought after by collectors and Merrythought Ltd. Bears are increasing in value and desirability.

Age: As with anything valued for rarity, the older it is typically indicates a higher value (with the exception of the aforementioned Louis Vuitton Bear which brought its auction price the same year it was issued). With that in mind, older is still preferred to newer.

At the very least you have a new hobby: bear collecting at garage sales. At the very most you already own a valuable friend!

There’s several ways to make a teddy, and when you’ve chosen a method, then you have to pick from a variety of materials. With so many techniques, how do you know which one to chose? Well, one particular method is needle felting, and it produces a really cute teddy. So what is needle felting? Starting with a large ball of wool, needle felters shape the material into a finished figure. The most important item you need, other than the wool, is a felting needle. The needles are designed to manipulate the wool’s fiber and rebind the different layers. The needles are what will give your bear its shape, and without one, you won’t be molding anything. You can usually pick up a needle felting kit that has everything included. On Woolpets there are plenty of kits to choose from, although only two of them are bears. The polar bear and panda bear kits come with your two basic needs: different colored wools and 2 felting needles. As an added bonus, Woolpets also include one skewer and a pair of beads in your kit. However, the business does say you will need a few additional items. But chances are you already have thread, a sewing needle, a ruler, and a foam pad at home. However, you can purchase felting needles from most craft stores. At Hobby Lobby, a felting needle costs 14.49, with refills costing 7.99. You’ll also find the Felt Works Roving wool there for 1.99 and up.When it comes to finding patterns, well. . . that’s the easy part. The internet has become a true life safer for craft makers. Now, teddy makers can find patterns and how to guides online for free. By typing in “how to needle felt a teddy” on Google, you can get a list of techniques and how to demonstrations. One of the best how to guides can be found on Custom Dolls, Houses, and Miniatures. The site provides a thorough step by step process with pictures. Now you know what materials to use, and where to find guides, try making your own needle felted teddy.

The story behind Steiff is a remarkable one. Like Adolph Gund, Margarete Steiff was a German teddy maker. At an early age, Margarete was diagnosed with Polio; a disease which often leaves its victims paralyzed. The teddy maker could only make her teddies with one hand, yet despite her physical limitations, she continued to sew. By 1880, Margarete turned her passion into a company, and for 130 years, Steiff continues to be a success. It wasn’t until 1902, after the urging of her nephew (Richard Steiff), that the business began producing teddy bears. Now, teddy collectors can recognize Steiff bears by the buttons in their ears. Franz Steiff was responsible for the symbol, and the company has been producing the buttons since 1904.So what makes the Steiff teddies so different? Unlike most teddy companies, Steiff uses a woven plush to make their collectibles; almost all other teddy businesses use knitted plush. The material Steiff uses is rather costly, which in turn, explains why their collectibles are more pricey than most. However, the woven plush is used primarily for its Child/Baby collection. In regards to the company’s collectible bears, Steiff uses materials like mohair, cotton velvet, and even silk!Collectors will love the vast assortment of plush animals Steiff produces today. Collections vary from the Classic Teddy Bears, which include the Jona, 1909 and 1920 bears, to the Classic Animals, with the collectibles Franzi Parakeet and Goldy Hedgehog. However, the Classic Licenses collection includes some story time favorites, such as Paddington Bear, Tom Kitten, and Mr. Todd the fox.To purchase a Steiff collectible, you’re going to spend a 100 or over. One bear, Memories, The Marianne Steiff Meisel Bear, runs for 525. While the products are pricey, they last a lifetime, and are a valued addition to your teddy collection.

You’ve always known Starbucks for its great tasting coffee. But did you know they have collectible teddies, too? Well, if you didn’t, you were missing out. Every season the company brings out a new Bearista bear, and by now, there’s plenty to add to your collection. One of the companies most infamous and sought after bears is the 2009 Bearista Bear for Halloween.
